He has his hat.
PAX east was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. On top of everything else, the people, the amazing camaraderie, the fact that everyone seemed as excited as I was to be there, was an evening with Scott Kurtz.
Fuck the concert. I had a hard choice to make but I’m a huge fan of PVP and what Scott does in general so my wife and I went down to line up for his panel instead of going to see the Saturday Night concert. Spoiler: totally worth it.
When we eventually piled into the theatre we took a couple seats by the projector in the front row. The panel was scheduled to start at 10:30 and we were both on our iPhones playing PvZ when the back of the room erupted with applause. Scott had come in about a quarter of an hour early and was ready to start.
He explained that he was tricked into drinking cosmos at the hotel bar and that he had a decent buzz on. He asked if anyone was coming after him, and when the enforcers responded no he replied, “it’s going late tonight!” which was met with enthusiasm.
Ask anyone in attendance what happened over the next 3 hours, and what you’ll hear is that one of the most humorous and open discussions between a creator and his fans took place.
Instead of the scheduled hour, he told personal stories for 2 hours and then opened the floor for Q&A. He began surveying the crowd for questions, answering them with humour and honesty. While looking for questions, he noticed I was wearing an Apple baseball cap.
He asked me if I could get him one, it took my wife elbowing me to realize he was asking me, and I told him I could. He offered me a picture of boobies for a hat. Who could refuse?
He began to draw while taking other questions, mention that he was putting the boobs on Scratch. At one point he giggled, saying that it looked like he was holding them under his armpits.
He eventually called me up to get the sketch, but making me promise to not tweet or show anyone the picture until he got the hat. I offered him mine, which he declined, and promised not to show anyone.
I managed to get his hat quite a bit earlier than expected. I sent it via CanadaPost (whose tracking sucks balls) and he received it about 10 days ago. I double checked with him that it was ok to post the sketch and he responded “Post away”.
Thanks Scott. Honestly.

The fact that it says “Stellar Cartography” at the top…well let’s say there are things better than boobs on a cat.
